Using essential oils in your love life: Part 2

As promised in my last post, I’m going to give you some recipes for blends you can make. You can use these as a perfume, to diffuse in a room or to massage on that special someone.

If using these blends as perfume, you may wish to add a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. In my post The magic of essential oil blends, I used 28 drops of blend to 15 mL (1/2oz) of carrier oil as a rule of thumb. You may prefer the perfume to be more concentrated, however, so in this case use less carrier oil. In some reference books, I’ve seen authors suggest 20 drops of essential oil to 10 mL (1/3oz) of carrier oil. You be the judge. In all cases it would be best to use a dark-coloured glass bottle to store your perfume blend. These are usually available from healthfood stores or pharmacies.

Your other option is to put the blend in a spray bottle or atomizer, using water as the carrier. Again, the more water you put in, the more diluted the spray. A good rule of thumb for starters would be 20 drops of blend to 20 mL (2/3oz) of water. Keep your atomizer in a dark place and always shake before using it as essential oils and water don’t mix.

Mood lifter
This is a blend to promote joy and self-love and help overcome feelings of grief and depression.

* 40 drops of bergamot
* 40 drops of ylang ylang
* 30 drops of rosewood
* 10 drops of jasmine
* 5 drops of rose

Romance blend
This is a blend to uplift, refresh and arouse. It includes myrrh, which is an essential oil used traditionally to enhance the feeling of spirituality, but also euphoria. Black pepper oil has aphrodisiac qualities.

* 30 drops of geranium
* 30 drops of rosewood
* 15 drops of ylang ylang
* 10 drops of myrrh
* 10 drops of black pepper

Massage blend
Jasmine has aphrodisiac properties, while ylang ylang helps to balance the male-female energies. Rosewood is soothing and nourishing to the skin and relaxing to the body.

* 40 drops of rosewood
* 20 drops of ylang ylang
* 20 drops of ylang ylang

If you make this up as a massage blend, you will want to add a carrier or base oil such as sweet almond oil or jojoba. Use roughly 140 mL (5oz) of carrier oil to your 60 drops of essential oil. Use a dark-coloured glass bottle to store your blend and after making leave for 3 days.  Do a skin test by putting a drop on the inside of your forearm and leaving it for 24 hours. If you don’t get any itchiness or irritation, the blend should be fine to start using.

For the boys
Not to forget the menfolk, I’ve included some recipes that are bit less floral and more woody and refreshing. However ladies, feel free to try these if they are more to your liking.

Fresh blend
Lime is very stimulating and uplifting, while cedarwood is relaxing and also promotes spiritual awareness and communication.

* 30 drops of ylang ylang
* 30 drops of lime essential oil
* 20 drops of neroli essential oil
* 20 drops of cedarwood essential oil

Woody blend
Both patchouli and lavender are relaxing and patchouli is regarded by some as an aphrodisiac oil also. Patchouli also adds to this blend a bit of an earthy scent.

* 30 drops of geranium oil
* 30 drops of lavender oil
* 20 drops of patchouli
* 20 drops of cedarwood oil
