Notes for writers seeking publication in WellBeing Magazine

*** Please note WellBeing is unable to accept article submissions of a promotional or advertorial nature. ***

WellBeing magazine covers ways to improve the quality of your life, the lives of those around you and the health of the planet. It's important that you read some recent issues of WellBeing magazine before submitting an article. (If you are unfamiliar with WellBeing's style, the likelihood of being published in the magazine is greatly diminished.) We look for articles that are empowering, informative and entertaining. In particular, we welcome articles on the following themes:

Natural health – unique and cutting-edge articles on health issues, preventative measures and natural solutions

Soul – ways to reconnect

Natural therapies – informative and practical articles on a range of healing modalities

Esoteric – ancient ways for the modern day

Exercise – getting physical, with soul

Environment – news and suggestions about how to tread lightly on the planet

Animals – caring for animals with natural therapies and remedies

Wholefood cooking – nourishing foods and simple recipes. Please note it is our policy not to knowingly accept advertising or editorial on products that use artificial sweeteners or monosodium L-glutamate (MSG).

Natural beauty – ways to enhance natural beauty without the use of synthetic chemicals. Please note it is our policy not to knowingly accept advertising or editorial on products that use sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), fluoride, acetone, benzaldehyde (synthetic almond oil) or propylene glycol.

Travel – adventure, spiritual or related to the beauty of nature

Children – raising healthy, harmonious children

Real Life Experience stories – first-person accounts of overcoming serious and/or chronic health issues using natural means

Editorial policy and style guidelines
• WellBeing does not publish advertorial or "people profiles". Please do not mention personalities, products, commercial services et cetera in your work. Enquiries about promotional opportunities in WellBeing may be directed to WellBeing's advertising representatives: Sudha Hamilton (T: (02) 9887 0308, E: shamilton@universalmagazines.com.au) and Robert Watkins (T: (02) 9887 0358, E: rwatkins@universalmagazines.com.au).
• Personalise, where you can, by talking to “you”, as you would in a conversation. Try to avoid talking about “we”, “us” and “our”.
• Please be mindful of your legal position regarding the laws applying to libel, slander and defamation, as the publication has a disclaimer that reverts to the author.
• Avoid a propagandist or dictatorial style of writing. Try to be helpful and informative. WellBeing is a self-help, do-it-yourself manual for creative change, personal growth and ecological awareness. Having finished your article, the reader should be able to take a few steps recommended in the story to create a positive change in behaviour.
• Avoid prosy, lyrical or pseudo-poetic styles of writing.
• Make the reader an offer. What benefit will the reader gain by getting beyond the headline and first paragraph? Can they relate?
• Write what you know about from personal experience or research. If you are making a technical or health claim or referring to research, please provide full references.
• Provide a brief “biographical footnote” (two or three sentences) describing yourself, your qualifications and your current professional status. You may include brief contact details if you wish.
• WellBeing does not print poetry, cartoons or fiction.
• WellBeing reserves the right to edit all material accepted for publication.

Important information about research and referencing
• If you are performing some of your research on the internet, please be discerning about the information you encounter. Always ensure your sources (online and otherwise) are reputable and accurate.
 • It is important that you consult your sources first hand. Please do not cite a second-hand reference without having consulted the original source.
• Please be mindful of plagiarism. Plagiarism is "the appropriation or imitation of another's ideas and manner of expressing them, as in art, literature, etc., to be passed off as one's own" (The Macquarie Concise Dictionary. 3rd ed., s.v. "plagiarism"). To avoid the risk of plagiarising, acknowledge all your sources with full references and use quotation marks when transcribing material verbatim.

Copyright agreement
Your submission must be your own original work. If it is accepted for publication in WellBeing, you will be required to sign Universal Magazines' Copyright Agreement:

"I assign to Universal Magazines the whole of the copyright, including any future copyright, in all works made by me for Universal Magazines including photography, contributions and any other associated works, from the date of this agreement to 31 December 2008. I understand that it is Universal Magazines policy to retain full copyright of all work commissioned or accepted for publication by Universal Magazines. I acknowledge that Universal Magazines will have unlimited and unrestricted use of such works, in whole or in part, in print and electronic media. I also agree and acknowledge that any ex gratia payment by Universal Magazines to me for additional commercial use of the works will be made solely at the discretion of Universal Magazines."

Enquiries about copyright may be directed to the Associate Publisher, Janice Williams (T: (02) 9887 0316, E: jwilliams@universalmagazines.com.au).

Rates of payment
• Articles – AU$150 per 1000 published words.
• Real Life Experiences – AU$150 each, regardless of the number of words published.
• Photography – payment depends on the quality and size of the image/s published.
• In all cases payment is made 30 days after publication.

How to supply your submission
• Please email your article submission as a Word for Windows file.
• We recommend that articles be approximately 2500 words.
• We recommend that Real Life Experience stories be approximately 1200 words.
• Submission of images is not essential but preferred (especially for travel articles). Make sure all photographs, transparencies and slides are marked with a brief descriptive caption and the photographer's name and address (for return). Electronic images should be 300dpi jpegs or tiffs with a linear size of at least the size they will appear in the magazine. Note: We are unable to use negatives (you will need to have them printed).

Please note
• WellBeing has lengthy colour production lead times, so it cannot be guaranteed when your article will be published. There are also many factors of editorial balance and advertising volume that affect the final story grid for any one issue. Sometimes a story may be postponed for an issue if it closely resembles another or if the topic relates to a future theme.
• When your article has been selected for a particular issue, we will send you a contract specifying terms and payment.
• WellBeing cannot be held responsible for loss or damage to unsolicited manuscripts or artwork.

Please note all manuscripts are received as SUBMISSIONS ONLY and cannot be formally accepted until vetted by our Editorial Review Board.
