Byron Bay Film Festival
Now entering its fourth year, BBFF is a growing enterprise that each year attracts a greater number of film submissions and larger audiences.
“We have deliberately shaped the Festival’s vision and our film choices around Byron’s worldwide reputation as a centre for creativity, style, eco-friendly green living and a vibrant multicultural sense of community. And that is something our audiences – both local and visitors – are really responding too, “said Festival Director J'aimee Skippon-Volke.
A continuing flow of screen industry seachangers from all over the nation and the world have brought their various skills and interests into the Byron area. The festival draws upon the eclectic interests of this dynamic region as well as its local filmmaking community to build a programme that screens a diverse range of film themes including, for the first time in 2010, music videos.
BBFF 2010 will screen 150 films which are a mix of Australian and international. Over 750 films were submitted from 57 different countries and the Festival organisers have been busily viewing and reviewing to select the cream of the submissions to deliver to the viewers. Both day and night sessions offer audiences a range of film choices – from art house to experimental to documentary to feature to surf, with plenty of animation and shorts in between.
Adding to the festivities, 2010 will be a celebration of 100 years of film being shown in Byron Bay; on the same exact spot where the Festival takes place. This special centenary will add a memorable celebratory aspect to the Festival.
“People love coming to Byron Bay so we’ve been able to attract participation from international filmmakers, directors, producers and performers, along with prominent members of Australia’s own film industry. So the films screening are exposed to both a wide audience and a well-connected one - the perfect scenario for building on a filmmaker’s exposure and potential!” J’aimee says.
Over nine days, BBFF offers not just film sessions but also a range of information and stimulating workshops and panel discussions led by industry professionals.. And of course there is a glittering Gala Opening Night and the Red Carpet Closing Night that have been known to deliver glamour and excitement and even some mystery celebrity sightings!
“The Byron Bay International Film Festival prides itself on the creation of an event that stays with the audience long after the festival is over. Thought provoking, stimulating, heartwarming and inspiring, it’s one of those Festivals that people remember. It’s a festival with heart – one that brings the world of film to the heart of Byron Bay….” J’aimee says.
