Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency

Alpha-1 antitrypsin is a genetic disease characterised by a lack of the protein alpha-1 antitrypsin in the liver. This protein breaks down enzymes in multiple organs of the body, and it protects the lungs from irritants. People deficient in this substance are more susceptible to developing emphysema.

Symptoms in infants: jaundice, swelling of the abdomen, poor feeding.

Symptoms in adults: fatigue, poor appetite and swelling of the abdomen and legs.

Who to consult: dietician, GP, herbalist, homoeopath, naturopath, respiratory specialist.
