Backache

A large proportion of adults experience lower back pain resulting from muscle spasm, and damaged intervertebral disks, ligaments or bones. Intervertebral disks are cushions that lie between vertebrae and as the outer layer of the disk degenerates with age and wear and tear, the inner soft material can protrude onto spinal nerves causing severe pain. Herniated, prolapsed and slipped disk are all names for the same problem. Other systemic issues such as prostate, kidney, bladder and female pelvic problems can also cause back pain.

Contributing factors: poor posture, emotional disturbance, pregnancy, improper footwear and walking practices, lifting, straining and calcium deficiency.

Who to consult: Acupuncturist, chiropractor, dietician, GP, herbalist, homoeopath, kinesiologist, massage therapist, naturopath, osteopath, physical therapist, physiotherapist, psychologist, yoga practitioner.
