Canker sores (aphthous ulcers)

Canker sores are white swellings that progress to ulcers and are commonly found on the tongue, lips and gums. The canker sore is an inflammation, rather than infection, and as such can appear and disappear suddenly. Canker sores are associated with Crohn’s disease that affects the bowels.

Contributing factors: poor dental hygiene, food allergies, nutritional deficiencies, irritation from dental work, trauma, using a hard bristle toothbrush, stress and fatigue.

Who to consult: Dietician, GP, herbalist, homoeopath, pharmacist.
