Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, an organism that can be contracted during anal, oral and vaginal sex with an infected partner. Untreated chlamydia can lead to sterility and pelvic inflammatory disease in females. Males may see a watery mucous discharge from the penis and swelling around the testicles.

Symptoms: genital inflammation and itching, vaginal discharge, difficulty urinating, burning sensation during urination and painful sexual intercourse. Symptoms are often mild, such that chlamydia goes undiagnosed until other effects are seen.

Who to consult: GP, gynaecologist, pharmacist, urologist.
