Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)

Chronic fatigue syndrome is not a disease, but a group of symptoms (hence the name syndrome) that characteristically mimic a viral infection. There is no known cause for CFS. Although CFS is not life-threatening, there is no known cure for it and although recovery can be spontaneous, recurrence can also be spontaneous. CFS should not be mistaken for a busy lifestyle and being overworked and stress. Patients with CFS cannot complete even 50% of their daily activities and their fatigue does not resolve after bed rest.

Symptoms: include disabling fatigue, aching muscles and joints, anxiety, depression, poor memory, difficulty concentrating, fever, headaches, low blood pressure, intestinal problems, irritability, loss of appetite and mood swings.

Who to consult: Dietician, GP, herbalist, homoeopath, meditation practitioner, naturopath, occupational therapist, pharmacist, physical therapist, psychologist, yoga practitioner.
