Coeliac diseae

Coeliac disease is a digestive disorder caused by gluten intolerance. Gluten is found in wheat, rye, oats and barley. It is believed that the body responds to gluten like it would an antigen and the subsequent immune mediated response can damage the small villous projections on the lining of the small intestine. This results in the malabsorption of vitamins, minerals and calories, as well severe diarrhoea. If untreated coeliac disease is life-threatening. Coeliac disease is hereditary and it is often diagnosed when a child is first started on cereals.

Symptoms: diarrhoea, weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, nausea, abdominal swelling, fatigue and bone pain. Children with coeliac disease often struggle to thrive and may have an emaciated appearance.

Who to consult: Dietician, GP, herbalist, immunologist, pharmacist.
