Cold sores

Cold sores are blisters that arise 3 to 10 days after exposure to the herpes simplex virus (HSV). After cold sores regress, the virus remains in the body in a dormant state. When the immune system is compromised during excessive stress, another viral infection or immunosuppressive drugs, the virus can reappear and cause more cold sores.

Symptoms: In the first stage there is itchiness around the infected area and in the second and third stages the swellings appear and convert to blisters. In the fourth and fifth stages a crust or ulcer forms and this usually lasts for 4 days. In the last stage the swelling reduces, but the sore is still red with a hard scab.

Who to consult: Dietician, GP, herbalist, pharmacist, relaxation specialist.
