Fibrocystic breasts

Fibrocystic changes in the breast are characterised by cysts or lumps in the breast caused by monthly hormonal variations in oestrogen and progesterone. The lymphatic system transports fluids around the body, but if there is excess fluid, spaces in the breast can be filled and scar tissue formed around them to form a cyst. The size of a cyst will vary over the menstrual cycle. Cysts are benign are usually considered to be harmless.

Symptoms: round lumps or cysts that move freely and are soft, tenderness and lumpiness. As cysts swell they can cause feelings of a dull ache, fullness or burning.

Who to consult: Dietician, GP, herbalist, homoeopath, naturopath, pharmacist.
