Fungi commonly infect skin and mucosal membranes under nails, between toes and on other parts of skin that are moist and in close contact to other skin (e.g. jock itch, athlete’s foot). Fungal infections that arise in the mouth are termed oral thrush. Recurrent fungal infections indicate suppressed immune function.
Symptoms: moist, itchy, red patches on skin or mucosal membranes. In infants fungal infections can manifest as diaper rash. Fungal infection of the nails can cause discolouration and swelling of the nail and infection of the vagina can produce a creamy discharge.
Who to consult: GP, herbalist, naturopath, pharmacist.
