Leg ulcers

An ulcer is a sore that develops on skin that has limited oxygenation and nutrient circulation. Venous ulcers result from the pooling of blood in the foot and lower leg, due to the inability of veins to keep blood flowing towards the heart. Arterial ulcers occur when an artery cannot provide an adequate supply of oxygen to tissue. This can occur due to atherosclerosis or an embolism. Leg ulcers are common in diabetics.

Cause: poor circulation, thrombophlebitis and varicose veins.

Who to consult: Dermatologist, dietician, GP, herbalist, homoeopath, naturopath, pharmacist.
