Chocolate is considered by many as the ideal food to turn to when you are stressed or need to boost your mood. There is some reason to think this might be justified considering that cocoa does contain feel good chemicals as well as caffeine which acts as a stimulant. Now a new study has found that people tend to eat more chocolate when they feel depressed. The study looked at almost 1000 people who were not on antidepressants asking them how much chocolate they ate and giving them a test to establish their level of stress and depression. They found that men and women with major depression ate an average of 336 grams of chocolate per month, depressed people ate around 230 grams, and non-depressed people ate 150 grams. Whether chocolate causes or cures depression remains to be definitely established but there is certainly a clear link.
