As the clock ticks toward five o’clock on Friday does your mood start to pick up? If so you are not alone. The “weekend effect” has now been documented in a new study that tracked the moods of people aged 18 to 62 who worked at least 30 hours per week. Regardless of whether they were doctors, labourers, secretaries or lawyers, and independent of their salary, the people felt better physically and mentally on weekends. The research also revealed that weekends were associated with higher levels of freedom and feelings of closeness to others. This supports the “self-determination” theory which holds that wellbeing depends on psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. It raises questions of how work can be made more supportive of individual wellness. Rumours that employer groups are considering extending the working week to encompass the feelgood Friday to Sunday period have not been substantiated.
