Probiotics prevent kid’s colds

As the first cool airs of autumn tickle around your nether regions it is a reminder that winter is waiting around the corner. With winter comes an increase in colds and flu and that is particularly so for children who catch some kind of bug around ten times every year. That is why a new study which shows that probiotics help reduce colds is particularly good news.

Parents will always dread their child becoming ill primarily because of the pain involved in watching your beloved little one suffering but also because of the sleeplessness and physical exhaustion that will ensue for the parents themselves. So for parents anything that can reduce the chances of your child becoming sick is like a wooden floor to a tap-dancing gerbil; a matter of extreme interest.

Probiotics are either the good bacteria that live in the digestive system or substances that promote the growth of those good bacteria. In this new study a group of children taking a probiotic supplement were compared to a group of children who took a placebo supplement. Both groups took the supplement once a day for three months.

The children in the study were aged between three and seven and had all experienced colds at least three times during the previous winter. The supplement that was given to some of children contained three billion colony forming units of the good bacteria Lactobacillus helveticus, Bifidobacterium infantis, and Bifidobacterium bifidus. It also contained fructooligosaccharides which are a type of indigestible fibre that promote the growth of good bacteria.

Overall, taking the probiotic supplement reduced the incidence of colds in children.

In the placebo group 69 per cent of children had at least one incident of illness during the study compared with only 52 per cent in the probiotic supplement group. Additionally, 43 per cent of kids in the placebo group missed at least one day of school during the study compared to 26 per cent of children receiving the supplement.

On top of this the children who had the probiotics had fewer respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses than other children.

It all adds up to promoting the healthy bacteria in your child’s intestinal tract boosting their immunity and therefore reducing colds and flu.
