A Q&A with Ben Kierath, the co-founder of True Protein
We speak to Ben Kierath, the co-founder of True Protein, an all-natural sports supplement brand. True blend their products from the highest quality raw ingredients and keep every product free from fillers, additives, hidden sugars or anything artificial, ensuring you reap the genuine health benefits of their products.
How did your brand come to be and when?
True Protein launched in 2014 as the brainchild of myself and my brother, James Kierath. Whilst living in London we struggled to find a protein that both did the job and tasted great. A lot of existing products on the market either had artificial ingredients, unnecessary additives or just didn’t taste good. Following in the footsteps of our entrepreneurial father, Tim Kierath, the founder of Australian gardening brand Hoselink, we decided if we couldn’t find what we were looking for, we should try and create our own.
Driven by the desire to produce the best tasting all-natural protein on the market, we returned home to Australia and worked tirelessly to source the finest ingredients from around the world and develop formulas that were clean, tasty and excellent nutritionally. To this day every powder is blended at our own on-site facility in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, giving us complete control over the production process. We only use natural ingredients, which include freeze-dried fruits, Manuka honey, vanilla beans and raw cacao and we personally know all of our suppliers.
What was the initial vision for your brand? Has that changed over time?
Since its conception the brand has grown considerably, going from stocking 12 protein powders to over 300 individual products including amino acids, whey and vegan proteins, health food powders and protein snacks.
Where did the brand name come from?
We wanted a name that reflected the honesty and total transparency of our ingredient lists as well as the authenticity of the brand.
Who are your products suitable for?
Our products are for everyone, whether you’re an athlete, a keen gym-goer or just interested in leading a healthy lifestyle. Our products are meticulously created by our in-house product development team, led by Accredited Sports Dietitian, Roslyn Yee, to have clean, simple ingredient lists free from fillers and additives. We understand the need for a diet where food comes first and is supplemented only when necessary. For this reason, we create the highest quality supplements for when an extra boost is required. Whether you’re vegan, gluten free, lactose intolerant or diabetic, we have a product for every dietary need.
What are some of your favourite products in your range?
Our whey proteins are the best! Banana & Honey is my favourite.
Where do you source your ingredients?
We source them from around the globe – wherever in the world is renowned for the best quality. Our collagen peptides come from Argentina, our whey protein from New Zealand, our cinnamon from India, and our acai from the Amazon, to name just a few! Our team build relationships with all our suppliers so we can trace the story of every ingredient. The raw ingredients get shipped to our production facility in Sydney where we blend, package and distribute them.
Can you tell us a little more about the ingredients in your products?
The quality of the ingredients is integral to True Protein. The lengths we go to in order to source the very best raw ingredients is what makes us unique as a sports supplement brand. It’s so important to us, as our whole brand, including our name, has been built off being transparent, premium and natural. We can’t offer delicious all-natural protein powders without using the highest quality raw ingredients. We keep every product free from fillers, additives, hidden sugars or anything artificial, ensuring only what’s absolutely necessary going into each formula. This guarantees a delicious taste, genuine health benefits and a clean, simple ingredient list so you know what you’re putting in your body.
What’s next for your brand?
The future is looking bright here at True. We have just launched our first protein bar after four years of development and have plans to expand our range of protein flavours and protein snacks later this year. There’s lots more in the pipeline for next year too, so watch this space!
