We speak to Trudi Jaye, the brand manager of Gaia Retreat & Spa’s new all-natural skincare range, Retreatment Botanics.

What was your initial vision for the Retreatment Botanics range?

Olivia Newton-John, our co-founder and very own timeless beauty, long dreamed of creating an all-natural range that really worked to improve her skin, was safe to use and harmed no living creatures. The range was inspired by the luxurious healing treatments at our world-renowned, multi-award-winning Gaia Retreat & Spa in the Byron Bay hinterland, so guests could bring Gaia’s spa rituals back home.

Where do you source your ingredients?

We source the highest quality ingredients from both Australia and around the globe. We have carefully selected botanicals that contain potent, anti-ageing properties. For example, our face oil elixir Restore Serum features Australian natives Kakadu Plum, Rosella Flower and Sandalwood seed as well as Buriti Fruit from the Amazonian rainforest, a super-rich source of pro-vitamin A.

Why did you choose to use so many Australian ingredients in the Retreatment Botanics range?

We discovered Australian plants have adapted to one of the harshest climates on earth over thousands of years by intelligently storing high concentrations of vitamins and antioxidants. It seemed only natural for us to harness Australian plant intelligence that offers so many incredible benefits for the skin.

What is your favourite Australian ingredient to use for the skin?

One of our all-time favourite hero ingredients has to be Kakadu Plum sourced from the Kimberley region in northern Australia. It contains one of the highest natural and raw forms of vitamin C in the world. Vitamin C is known for its outstanding ability to brighten the skin, minimize the appearance of fine lines and provide collagen support. We use Cellular Extraction™ technology to ensure our vitamin C is delivered in its most stable and active form.

What products should be included for the ultimate at-home spa day?

At Gaia, we like to think that every day is an opportunity to create your own at-home spa retreat — a moment for taking some well-deserved “me-time”. On top of this, it’s also nice to pick a day of the week for a more in-depth facial treatment. My favourite day to do this is a Sunday, when I can relax, unwind and get my skin glowing for the week ahead.

For the ultimate at-home spa day, take a few deep breaths. Then start by cleansing with Radiance Cream Cleanser, following with Refining Face Polish, then apply our Instant Glow Masque for 20 minutes. This will feel amazing and is a wonderful time to slip into a warm bath or just simply relax. Once the face masque is removed with a soft cloth, apply a few pumps of our vitamin C intensive Kakadu Brightening Serum, then gently press our Firming Eye Contour Cream around the eye area. For normal to combination types, follow with Light Hydrating Moisturiser, while dry skin types can follow with Restore Serum and Ultra Rich Moisturiser. Finish off your ritual by massaging your body with our luxurious Wild Kakadu Hand & Body Cream. It feels so good! Your skin will be glowing from head to toe.

Why is it important to avoid chemicals when it comes to skincare?

Your skin is your largest organ and what you put on your skin may be absorbed into your body. Many potentially harmful chemicals used in the skincare industry are unregulated, so it’s important to choose skincare with a strong commitment to purity and wellness.

What sustainable practices do the Retreatment Botanics range follow?

All our products are toxic-free, vegan, palm-oil free (proudly certified by the Orangutan Alliance) and made from the purest natural and organic ingredients. Our product boxes are made from recycled paper. We use violet glass bottles and our tubes are recyclable with the TerraCycle program. We always aim to minimize our packing materials and use recycled materials where possible.

What are your tips for caring for our skin?

  1. Use pure, vitamin and antioxidant-rich skincare daily.
  2. Stay hydrated and eat beauty-enhancing foods such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich avocado, organic dark leafy greens, berries and chia seeds.
  3. Protect your skin from the harsh Australian sun by wearing a hat and staying out of the sun when UV levels are high.
  4. Get a good night’s sleep.
  5. Regular practice of stress-releasing activities such as meditation, yoga, mindful breathing and time in nature.

What’s next for Retreatment Botanics?

We are launching our beautiful new range while sharing the message that timeless beauty is achievable for everyone despite how busy you may be. Using simple beauty rituals at home such as mindful movement, relaxation, facial massage and pure skincare products, you can experience a deep sense of self-care and nurture without having to visit a retreat — although it’s lovely to treat yourself with that, too!
