Let\u2019s face it, getting a new career about every eight years requires some serious upskilling. Or does it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While jobs-for-life are about as extinct as rare ocean species, having jobs or gigs you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for life is entirely possible, says career architect Edwin Trevor-Roberts, who recently worked with for-purpose organisations in Bhutan for the United Nations. While he was there, he interviewed a monk about meaningful work and centuries-old lessons from the happiest place on earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what is the new real? \u201cWe just don\u2019t know what paying roles will exist in 10 or 20 years\u2019 time,\u201d he says. Although futurists have looked into their crystal balls to predict such gigs as \u201cethical sourcing officers\u201d who maintain the ethical footprint of a company; and \u201ccyber city analysts\u201d, who keep tech in smart cities up and running \u2014 we really have no idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor that reason, the concept of a career as a destination needs to be reframed as an evolution,\u201d Edwin explains. \u201cYou will spend your career constantly learning and moving towards the next thing,\u201d he adds. \u201cAnd you\u2019ll never get to a point where you feel you\u2019ve mastered everything. But a career can be messy and what is beautiful is how we respond to that messiness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Don\u2019t stress over buzzwords<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than clench your jaw when you hear the word \u201cagility\u201d and go all \u201cI-must-have-control\u201d, consider your career a constant experiment, a place in which you can learn and play, says Edwin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAgility is a big buzzword and there\u2019s lots of hype around it,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat it really means is being able to respond to opportunities that come your way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The enemy of a great opportunity is a good opportunity, he warns. You, your own career guru, must develop the wisdom to know the difference. That can be based on whether you think you have the right skills or expertise and keeping them up to date. But it can also be about having a mindset that says I\u2019m going to slay this. \u201cIt\u2019s not about risk, or courage, it\u2019s about curiosity,\u201d Edwin shares.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Finding your strut<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also about knowing exactly who you are, in a no-Insta-filter kind of way. Faking is so anti-career bliss. Who wants to pretend they\u2019re excited about foreign markets when they\u2019d rather be starting their own not-for-profit?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serial entrepreneur Patrice Tanaka, founder of Joyful Planet, suggests sitting somewhere quiet and spending some time discovering your own personal \u201clife purpose\u201d before choosing your next career adventure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy that I mean asking how you will leverage your talents, expertise and passion in the service of other people and our planet,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Yorker Patrice reinvented her own life in the aftermath of 9\/11 and the death of her husband by taking ballroom dancing lessons and starting a new business that helps clients globally find their joy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLiving your life purpose is the best way to remain focused on what matters most, especially during challenging and tragic times like dealing with the twin pandemics of COVID-19 and systemic racism,\u201d she shares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By feeling connected to your inner guru, you can change the world, starting with your own life, she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>It\u2019s not just about what you know\u00a0<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s true that your joy-worthy career may find you regularly studying up on new tech, trends or core skills. But don\u2019t get so obsessed with upskilling that you forget about the other crucial component of your success: building relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPurely absorbing knowledge is not enough if you don\u2019t have a network that gives you an understanding of the global playing field,\u201d says Edwin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make one-on-one contact. Repeat. Again, and again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, if it\u2019s fear of the unknown that gives you the feels \u2014 and not in a good way \u2014 take one step forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThen take the next small step,\u201d he shares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, you will have a job or gig you love for life, growing and changing with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Don\u2019t just be agile, be brilliant\u00a0<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global thought-leader Janine Garner, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be Brilliant: How to lead a life of influence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggests four ways to survive and thrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Know you:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Matrix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the main character (Neo) meets The Oracle and walks under a sign that reads <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temet Nosce<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Latin for \u201cKnow Thyself\u201d. Getting clear on who you are and owning it \u2014 constantly exploring, reflecting and knowing that your inner belief and knowledge is what others will see \u2014 will you keep growing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Be you:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Influence starts with you courageously owning all the facets that make you \u2014 your strengths and weaknesses \u2014 and giving yourself permission to lead from this space.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Be ready:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Being exhausted isn\u2019t leadership or positively influencing others. Become masterful at taking back control and thriving energetically. Say \u201cno\u201d more to protect your boundaries and thriving habits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Be heard:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You have nothing to hide, nothing to lose and nothing to prove.
