ANZAC fun run

Running and giving

Fun Runs are an ideal way to get fit while giving. The ANZAC Day Challenge is a special event for charity that provides several ways to support charitable giving while running, or even while others are running.

ANZAC Day is an annual event, held on April 25. It is more than a commemoration of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day the nation remembers all Australians who served in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC is about courage, sacrifice, service, and friendship – which Australians call mateship. ANZACs represented the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp, now the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The ANZACs landed on Gallipoli, Turkey, on April 25, 1915, and the campaign lasted for eight months.

ANZAC Day this year – 2015 – commemorates 100 years of the ANZAC spirit. What a great way to take part in the centenary of the ANZAC tradition!

Soldier On, which I support, is about Australians supporting physically and psychologically wounded service men and women to enhance their recovery.

The ANZAC Day Challenge is a timed running and trekking endurance challenge held on ANZAC Day – Saturday, April 25, 2015 – covering 100 kilometres. The running event starts at St. Ives Showground at 7:00 am, after the traditional Dawn Service. The trail extends through the scenic Ku-ring-ai and Garigal National Parks of northern Sydney and finishes at the Manly Warringah War Memorial Park at Manly Dam alongside the Lakeside Memorial. It will have a 24-hour time limit to enable many people (runners and trekkers) to achieve the entire course. The challenge can be undertaken as an individual, family, or team.

Runners, trekkers, spectators and supporters can assist those who are running by giving funds for charities such as Soldier On and Mates4Mates. In addition, the event is also seeking sponsors. Giving is not mandatory – it is optional – but running and giving is a wonderful way to participate. For example, encouraging friends to give one cent for each kilometre of running is only a hundred cents – just $1 – which is not onerous for family members. Imagine giving 10 cents per km, which will total $10.

The event aims to raise at least $500 on the day to help Soldier On and Mates4Mates support service men and women who need vital assistance. Go to the websites of these charities to find out more about them. Soldier On, which I support, is about Australians supporting physically and psychologically wounded service men and women to enhance their recovery. Mates4Mates provides support to wounded, injured, or ill current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force personnel and their families. Running and giving is an inspirational gift to charities.
