APPLIED LEARNING
Professional capability is developed through a combination of academic knowledge, practical experience and reflective learning. Alongside theoretical foundations and contemporary research, students develop the communication, analytical and interpersonal skills essential for working effectively with people.
Hands-on work integrated with learning opportunities are embedded in most ACAP courses. Depending on the course, students may undertake placements, participate in professional practice experiences, engage with industry partners or complete assessments based on realistic workplace scenarios.
ACAP partners with more than 600 placement providers nationwide, giving eligible students opportunities to gain practical experience across a wide range of professional settings.
Students may also have the opportunity to develop their skills through the ACAP Clinic, where counselling, psychology and social work services are delivered to the community under guided supervision. This gives students valuable exposure to clientfacing environments while supporting the development of confidence, adaptability and professional judgement.

As awareness of mental health, wellbeing, community support and leadership development continues to grow, so does the demand for qualified professionals across the helping professions.
According to SEEK’s 2025 projected job growth data, psychology roles are expected to increase by 13.3 per cent over the next five years, counselling by 14.2 per cent, social work by 23.2 per cent and criminology-related careers by 18.9 per cent.
These figures reflect broader changes across Australian society. Greater investment in mental health services, growing demand for community support, increased focus on workplace wellbeing, and ongoing attention to social and justice-related issues are creating opportunities for professionals with specialist knowledge and skills.
Coaching is also experiencing significant growth internationally. The International Coaching Federation’s Global Coaching Study 2025 reported a 17 per cent increase in coaching professionals since 2023, reflecting demand across business, education, health and community sectors.
