Are your allergies ruining your life?

An allergy is an exaggerated response of the immune system or a reaction by your body to something that is usually not harmful. They are quite common and your genetic background as well as your environment can be factors that determine to what you are allergic.

It is usually caused by an over sensitivity of your immune system to something which is usually harmless but in you causes a response. These are called allergens and chemicals are then released called histamines which cause itching, swelling, mucus, muscle spasms etc.

Whichever part of the body is affected responds. Allergens that are breathed in lead to a stuffy nose for example and food allergens can cause vomiting. Allergies to plants lead to rashes and allergies to drugs can put the body into violent reactions. Often conditions such as eczema and asthma are linked to allergies. Common allergens include pollen, mould, pet fur and dust, food, certain drugs, jewellery, cosmetics or insect bites.

It is important to protect yourself against sensitivitiesSymptoms may vary but can include anything from breathing problems, vomiting, burning, teary, red or itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing, diarrhoea, headaches, rashes and itches, runny nose and stomach cramps.

If you have lots of the above reactions on a continuous basis it might be a good idea to have a sensitivity or allergy test. Skin testing is a common method of allergy testing. One type is known as the scratch test. It involves placing a small amount of the suspected allergy-causing substances on the skin, and then slightly scratching the area so the substance moves under the skin. The skin is closely watched for signs of a reaction, which include swelling and redness. This is available from your doctor or specialist.

Vega testing is another method used for testing for sensitivities and to determine the level of inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the fore-runner of many major illnesses and if we can keep the level of inflammation down we would be much healthier. The body needs to be more alkaline than acidic. The test is done by a saliva or hair sample analysis. There are many natural practitioners that can offer this test. Sometimes an elimination test is done in terms of eliminating certain foods etc from your diet however it may be wiser to have the sensitivity or allergy test done as it is much quicker.

The best way to overcome allergies or sensitivities is simply to avoid what causes your allergies in the first place. Sometimes it is important to take medication and for this you need to consult a doctor especially for asthma. There are many antihistamines and nasal sprays available on the market and there are also many natural supplements which can help you, such as Vitamin C. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) require medical treatment with epinephrine which must be given immediately. There are some reactions which must have medical intervention and one should not be so foolhardy as to not use it if necessary.

In children allergies can often be outgrown especially food allergies but usually if the reaction has been triggered it continues. Children who have been breastfed are less likely to have allergies especially if the mother avoids cow’s milk, eggs, nuts, and peanuts while breastfeeding. If there is a family history of eczema and allergies it is wise to discuss the implications for breast feeding with your paediatrician. The timing of introducing solid food is important as well as exposing babies to dust and pet fur etc. so they can develop some immunity. Children who grow up on farms have been found to have fewer allergies than those in a more ‘sterile’ environment. However, once the allergies have developed, treating them and avoiding the causes becomes more important. Ignored, your sensitivities will make your feel miserable and feeling ill to the point where it will affect your lifestyle.
