Feldenkrais Method®: Ease Pain, Enhance Movement, Embrace Life

Discover Feldenkrais Method® to ease pain, enhance movement, and embrace a more comfortable, efficient life. Learn how!

Have you ever got into your car and driven off and wondered why it felt a bit sluggish? Then you realised the handbrake was still on. Often our movement patterns — sitting at the computer, driving, carrying things, reacting to pain or recovering after injury, surgery or illness — mean that we have muscles holding us still. Just like the handbrake in the car, they stop us from moving freely. We can still move, but we get tired more quickly, things begin to hurt or we feel unsteady and off balance. Exercise designed to strengthen muscles can sometimes aggravate the problem. We need to find ways to switch off these muscles, releasing our muscular handbrakes, so movement becomes freer, easier and more efficient. Finding new, easy ways to move or remembering how we moved as children can reduce pain and increase both comfort and efficiency. Many people turn to Feldenkrais to discover ways to optimise their muscular tonus, rediscover comfortable movement and to reduce pain. Others come to improve balance and co-ordination, often after illness, surgery, stroke or other injuries. Parents are discovering how helpful it can be for children with movement and other development difficulties. People who perform, such as athletes, singers, musicians, dancers, equestrians and actors, not only find the work helpful in recovering from and preventing injuries, they use it to get that little bit more excellence in their performance. Moving becomes a pleasurable experience.

Discover a career that keeps you feeling younger and working longer. Learn through awareness of your own movement patterns how to help others reduce pain and movement limitations, restore easy movement, prevent injuries and improve their performance. Find a different way of thinking about change, what’s really possible, and know that life can be easier!

The Feldenkrais Method® utilises the inherent plasticity of the brain to learn new organisational and movement possibilities. It is ideal for working with people who want more ease or comfort, are recovering from illness or trauma, want to improve their physical, musical, mental or emotional performance or simply want to maintain their efficiency and elegance.

One of the delightful aspects of a Feldenkrais Professional Training Program is the diversity of participants. From 18 to 80 and from all walks of life, participants come to learn about themselves and others and how to facilitate change. The curriculum is designed to make the most of the life experience and learning styles of each participant as they learn with and from each other.

The next Feldenkrais Professional Training Program begins in February 2024. Your learning will be deeply embodied through movement processes, supported by clear conceptual models and practical activities. Between these sessions, you will work in local study groups or at home, supported with online learning activities. You will belong to a smaller learning group with a dedicated teacher who will get to know you as an individual, answer questions and provide supportive feedback, so that you emerge as a confident and competent practitioner. You will also have developed the skills to build and manage a successful practice in a style that works for you.

What practitioners have to say

“It was that basic thing: here am I, a physio, and I’m teaching people how to move, and I don’t actually know how to move. I realised there was such a big discrepancy between what I thought I was doing and how it looked. It blew my mind that those two experiences could be so out of whack.” ~ Julie

“A child diagnosed with left hemiplegia experienced profound learning that switched on his ability to use his left arm. There were numerous golden moments when a child started to sense new feelings around new movements; they seem to go into a state of very quiet self-listening.” ~ Louise

“Without the Method, I wouldn’t have been able to continue as a dancer. I would have been another dance statistic with a bad back having undergone surgery.” ~ Zoran
