Aromatherapy for the skin

Aromatherapy involves essential oils for their unique blend of natural chemicals that produce a range of therapeutic benefits. Aromatherapy and essential oils are great for stress relief, act as a natural decongestant for winter colds and are also natural air fresheners. Aromatherapy can also be a natural skincare solution for skin complaints and disorders.

Natural skincare and aromatherapy
There is a range of ailments that affect the skin that can be improved with aromatherapy. Here is a list of aromatherapy essential oils and how they can assist with skin disorders.

Bergamot is good for scalp conditions as well as psoriasis, acne and ulcers. Bergamot is also beneficial for stress relief and plays an even more effective role in treating skin conditions that may have resulted from stress.

Cedarwood is beneficial in skin and scalp conditions such as alopecia, acne and eczema.

Chamomile is great for a range of skin complaints and can assist in healing burns, cuts and inflammation.

For those who suffer from oily skin, aromatherapy offers a solution with a range of essential oils that can assist. Cypress has antiseptic and astringent properties that work to balance oily skin and aid healing. Lemon and tea-tree oils are also beneficial for oily skin.

Geranium has a range of uses but is particularly beneficial for skin and emotional disorders. Geranium is used in aromatherapy for its antiseptic and anti-fungal qualities, which are helpful for treating distressing skin disorders such as eczema.

Juniperberry has antiseptic properties and is beneficial for stress relief. Along with this, it helps regulate problem skin and is commonly used to treat acne, eczema and dermatitis.

Lavender is a gentle oil that can even be applied undiluted to the skin. Lavender can form part of a natural skincare regime for health and glowing skin. It can also produce beneficial effects for those suffering from dry skin, acne, eczema and psoriasis.

Patchouli is frequently used in aromatherapy for its soothing and calming qualities. As an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, it provides relief for skin disorders such as acne, athlete’s foot, eczema and dry and cracked skin.

Sandalwood is commonly used in cream and potions for its preservative powers. It makes a great facial oil, having a smoothing effect on dry and sensitive skin.

As part of a general natural skincare regime to help promote radiant, healthy skin, aromatherapy offers a range of options. Again lavender and cedarwood are beneficial. Jasmine has a wonderful smoothing effect on the skin. Rose oil is also commonly used for aromatherapy facial massages. Neroli is a an expensive oil, but it produces effective results in preventing stretch marks and scarring, reducing thread veins and assisting dry, sensitive skin.

It’s important to consult a practitioner to see if aromatherapy and essential oils are suitable for you. A qualified practitioner will prescribe the correct formula, as most oils should not be applied undiluted directly to the skin.
