Emphysema

Emphysema is a lung disease that develops after multiple years of exposure to cigarette smoke. In rare cases, emphysema can be caused by a genetic condition, aplha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. Factors such as poor air quality and air pollution can aid the progression of the disease. Emphysema is a painful and debilitating disease that significantly decreases quality of life and prevents a person from completing even their basic activities of daily living (e.g. brushing their teeth, walking around the house).

Symptoms: shortness of breath, inability to get in enough air, coughing, wheezing, excessive mucous production.

Who to consult: GP, herbalist, naturopath, physiotherapist, respiratory specialist.
