Hyperthyroidism (thyrotoxicosis)

This condition arises when there is over production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland, resulting in an overly active metabolic state.

Cause: tumour of the thyroid gland, infection or inflammation of the thyroid gland and drugs.

Symptoms: nervousness, irritability, hot temperature, increased perspiration, fatigue, increased frequency of bowel movements, hair and weight loss, changes in skin, nails, hand tremors, intolerance of heat, palpitations and protruding eye balls.

Who to consult: Dietician, endocrinologist, GP, naturopath.
