Rubella (German measles)

Rubella is a contagious viral disease that can be dangerous to a foetus if a pregnant female contracts the disease within the first trimester. Most children today receive the MMR vaccine, which protects them against measles, mumps and rubella. But the rubella virus still exists and outbreaks sporadically occur. The disease is generally not treated as it runs its course for a week and then the patient gradually improves. But in the case of pregnant women, the virus is considered contagious from one week before the rash appears to one week after the rash fades. It is important for women that want to become pregnant to ensure that they are vaccinated against rubella.
