Bell’s palsy

Bell’s palsy is characterised by facial weakness and paralysis as a result of inflammation of the facial nerve (cranial nerve number seven).

Risk factors: pregnancy, diabetes, respiratory ailments and viral infections.

Symptoms: inability to close the eyes, pain, tearing, drooling, hypersensitivity to sound and impaired taste.

Who to consult: GP, naturopath, neurologist, speech therapist.
