Perfume in Sync With Your Cycle
We speak with Jessica Kieft, a qualified aromatherapist and founder of Soluna and Eve, to learn how she is creating luxurious natural perfumes that align with the menstrual cycle and support women’s hormones and mood.
Your brand celebrates the gentle rhythm of nature, women’s hormones and cyclical living. What inspired you to create Soluna and Eve?
Soluna and Eve started from my own experience of coming off the contraceptive pill and struggling with my hormones going crazy. I felt completely out of sync with my body and it pushed me to start learning more about the menstrual cycle and what was actually going on each month (as we didn’t learn any of this in school!).
I knew I didn’t want to mask the symptoms; I wanted to find a more holistic way to support my hormones. As a qualified aromatherapist, I started using different essential oils throughout each phase of my cycle and noticed how much of a difference it made to my mood, energy and overall balance.
At the same time, I started to learn more about holistic hormonal balance and how many everyday products are filled with synthetic ingredients and endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can negatively impact women’s hormones. Perfumes being one of the worst.
I wanted to find a way to make a luxurious product that women would have the joy of using every day, but incorporate the benefits of cycle syncing with aromatherapy. That’s when I got the idea to create a perfume that not only smells beautiful, but actually works with women’s hormones, not against them.
How do your perfumes work with the body’s natural rhythm and what does it look like to match specific scents to each hormonal phase of the menstrual cycle?
At the base of every blend, we use lavender and clary sage, two essential oils that are heavily researched for their ability to support the nervous system and hormonal balance. Lavender has been shown to help reduce stress and calm the body, while clary sage is often used for its ability to support hormonal regulation and ease symptoms like mood swings and tension.
From there, each blend is built out with additional essential oils chosen very intentionally based on what your body is going through in that phase.
For example, in the menstrual phase we include more grounding oils to support rest and calm. In the follicular phase, you’ll find more uplifting oils to support energy and mental clarity as oestrogen starts to rise. During ovulation, we use more floral, confidence-enhancing oils like geranium to complement that natural peak in energy. And in the luteal phase, citrus oils are used to help support emotional balance as hormones begin to drop. But it’s not just about the benefits of the individual essential oils, it’s also about the overall scent profile of the perfumes.
Each perfume is designed to feel right for that phase. When you have low energy, you’re naturally drawn to softer, more grounding scents. When your energy is rising, you want something fresher and more uplifting. When you’re at your peak, you’re drawn to something more radiant and expressive.
How do you approach materials, sourcing and design so that each piece aligns with your values of care for people and planet?
It was important to me from the beginning that we could genuinely stand behind the word “clean”. There’s a lot of greenwashing in the fragrance space and I quickly realised that even many “clean” perfume brands still use denatured alcohol, which can contain toxic additives. That didn’t align with my values at all.
So, we took a different approach and sourced an organic grape alcohol as our base, to the point where we need a liquor license to use it! This shows how committed we are to doing things properly.
All our ingredients are COSMOS-approved natural, and we worked closely with a professional formulator who specialises in natural blends to ensure everything is both safe and effective. Transparency has always been a big part of the brand, so every essential oil is chosen with
intention, backed by research, and included for a reason — not just for how it smells.
What simple daily ritual do you personally return to when you need to recentre, and how does it inspire the experience you want to create for your community?
As an aromatherapist, I really understand the power of scent and how it connects to memory and emotion. When you use a particular essential oil consistently, you start to create a kind of “scent memory” and your brain begins to associate that smell with an emotional response. For me personally, one of the simplest rituals I come back to is just pausing and taking a deep breath with a scent I’ve created a connection with (like sweet orange when I’m feeling anxious or something more grounding when I need to slow down). It’s such a small moment, but it can shift how I feel almost instantly.
